Appendix I: Survey Question Draft
In this Appendix is the first draft of the questions we proposed for the survey. They present the ideas we had as the central purpose of the survey (referenced in Section 6.3.2 Survey Creation).
Section I - General Impressions
We are hoping to get a general impression of how the Harvey Mudd Community views its landscape, so that we can take it into account when suggesting any possible alternatives.
- When people think of landscape, do they think of its uses or appearance?
- Why are there different types of landscapes?
- When you think of Harvey Mudd College's landscape, what comes to mind? [i.e., want to understand what people treasure about HMC landscape, if anything]
- Does the current HMC landscape fit the college well?
- If Harvey Mudd had a different type of landscape, how much would you care?
- How does the campus make you feel?
Section II - Current Uses
We would like to make sure that we do not change any areas of campus that are well used.
- How do you currently use the landscape?
- Do you use any of the areas that we have decided are rarely or never used? (Will provide with a list or map.) If so, how and how often?
Section III - Possible Uses
In our research, we have found that landscapes serve many functions. Some are aesthetic, and many are utilitarian. We would like to know what functions the campus serves or you would like the campus to serve.
- What is you favorite use for a landscape?
- Assuming the campus's landscape is changed, what would YOU like to see added or taken away?
Section IV - Geography & Aesthetic Perceptions
We realize that different parts of the country have different aesthetic values, so we hope to gauge how people from different parts of the country react to a landscape change. [The following try to gauge people's ranking of HMC as beautiful or not.]
- In your opinion, what is the most beautiful place or type of landscape?___________
- In your opinion, what is the most ugly place or type of landscape?___________
- If you were to rate Harvey Mudd College's landscape (not including its architecture) on a scale from 1 (the most ugly place) to 10 (the most beautiful place), what score would you give it? ___
Section V - Aesthetics
Show pictures and gauge people's opinions of their beauty, plants and landscapes.
Section VII - Tradeoffs
We would like to know your opinions on the need for water conservation.
- Assuming you had two landscapes that were exactly the same otherwise, would you prefer a landscape that uses an average of 600,000 gallons a week and has mostly lush turf, or would you prefer a landscape that uses an average of 100,000 gallons a week and has mostly flowering native plants?
- Given two pictures, which do you prefer?
Section VIII - Fit with College
We want to know how you feel about the landscape as an integral part of Harvey Mudd.
- Do you feel that the landscape gives the campus a defined "feel"? If so, how?
- How would changing the landscape change your perceptions of the college?
- Would changing the landscape of the college have any effect on your donating money to the college? If so, in what way?
- Was the landscape a reason why you decided to come to Harvey Mudd?
- Since Harvey Mudd prides itself on being leaders in technology, do you think that Harvey Mudd College has a duty to lead the way in terms of regional landscaping to be in accordance with its mission statement
