1. Project Sponsors

1.1. Harvey Mudd College

Harvey Mudd College, located in Claremont, California, is a small, select, private college of mathematics, science, and engineering. Students complete a rigorous core of technical classes and substantial coursework in the humanities and social sciences in addition to their major course of study. Harvey Mudd's unique curriculum reflects its mission: to educate the world's best scientists, engineers, and mathematicians not just to become leaders in their respective fields, but also to understand the impact of their work on society.

The Harvey Mudd College Center for Environmental Studies, founded in May 1999, is an interdisciplinary group of faculty collaborating to provide students with the academic resources to address a wide range of environmental issues. The Landscaping Clinic is the first course offered by the Center.

Harvey Mudd College is sponsoring the Landscape Clinic as a way to better understand its current landscape and maintenance practices along with exploring the benefits of alternative landscaping. Of particular interest to Clinic liaisons President Jon Strauss and Grounds Supervisor Mike Barber are the campus community's opinions of the current landscape and opportunities for saving the College money through more efficient resource use.

1.2. Three Valleys Municipal Water District

Three Valleys Municipal Water District (TVMWD) is a public agency charged with managing the water supply that serves the Pomona, Walnut, and eastern San Gabriel Valleys in Los Angeles County. A member of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), it augments the region's water supply by selling water wholesale to local water companies and other institutions. The water distributed by Three Valleys is purchased from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and serves as a supplement to locally occurring groundwater in and around Claremont. It is treated at TVMWD's Miramar Water and Hydroelectric Facility in Claremont as well as the MWD's Weymouth Filtration Plant in La Verne. Three Valleys is a leader in the promotion of water conservation as an important resource. The Landscape Clinic liaison, Deputy General Manager Tim Worley, is interested in a rigorous, quantitative analysis of a local landscape's resource use, as compared to more drought-resistant, less water-intensive alternatives and would us like to create education possibilities through a wide dissemination of our results.
